Censorship of opposing views in the media helps the government to stay in power and prevents change. When the government censors opposing views in the media by not allowing journalists to criticise the government, which is usually deleting what they say, imposing heavy fines, or even taking legal action against them, people will not hear their perspective. If the government keeps on censoring opinions they do not agree with, people will only know the governments perspectives on issues, which can lead them to start to blindly follow the government as they know no other perspective. The government can also start to censor events and forbid news outlets to speak about it. This means that the government will be able to do almost anything and get away with it, which allows them to stay in power for longer as people will not know about the things they do so they will not oppose them. In short, when the government hides what they do, people will not know about it so there will be no opposition to their actions. All of this censorship reduces the opposition a government will face, allowing them to stay in power for longer.
